On this day in 1937, Daffy Duck appeared on screen for the first time in the Looney Tunes short "Porky's Duck Hunt." The animator Chuck Jones, who brought many of Warner Bros' cartoons characters to life, used to say that while Bugs Bunny was who people wanted to be, Daffy, Bugs' friend and rival, was often who they really were.

On this day in 1800, the Library of Congress was established when President John Adams signed into law an act that earmarked $5,000 for books for the use of Congress. The funding was part of a larger bill allowing for the permanent transfer of the seat of federal government to the new capital city of Washington, D.C.

On this day in 1900, William Harvey Carney became the first African-American soldier to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for Valor. Born into slavery in Norfolk, Virginia, Carney escaped to the North via the Underground Railroad and went on to serve in the legendary 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
