In an event that is relatively rare in upstate New York, physicians have diagnosed a case of West Nile virus in a Monroe County resident. It is the first infection with the potentially debilitating virus diagnosed here this year, the Monroe County Department of Public Health said Wednesday morning. Autumn is the time of year when the mosquitoes that carry West Nile are active, and county health officials used the local case to underscore the need to be vigilant when out-of-doors these days.
