Why we do what we do for the Holiday Drive

Postby Mr. Natural » Mon Nov 12, 2012 10:02 pm

Most of the families we help are complete strangers, and preferably remain that way. Occasionally, however, word gets back to us.

This first letter is from a young man we helped a couple years back. Obviously, I've obscured people's names.

The second letter showed up in my mailbox one day. The envelope said 'Minions' on it. The inscription had the dad's name and his 2 kids; it said: 'Thanks for everything and making the Christmas Season a joyful time for me and my kids'

And this is why we do the Minion Holiday Drive every year.

Thank you for sharing these Jeff, I've heard you speak of them but never seen them.

Most of our families have no idea where their gifts come from. I feel so honored to have such wonderful friends who give so generously. Every year about this time I panic and think what if we don't collect enough to get everything. Never have I been disappointed. When shopping day arrives we have plenty of cash to make all our purchases. Holly is the most incredible budget wizard. She has everything all mapped out, who gets what and how much it should cost. Sue spends hours going to local merchants asking for donations and making things happen. Without the two of them all this probably would not happen.

And ALL of you, the wonderful compassionate folks who make the donations roll in whether it's items or cash, we always end up making several families have a better Christmas then they had hoped for. I just can't say thank you enough.
I'm prolly the only Nila you know.

Absolutely. All of the donations help our families, but we definitely made a lasting impression on the young man from the first thank you note. He contacts me from time to time, to let me know he is doing ok. He has a steady part time job, is back in college full time - I believe he is starting his last semester for a degree in social work in January - and has a much nicer apartment, now with a fiancée! He credits us for giving him a hand up at his lowest point, and changing his life for the better.

We make a difference. Small $10 contributions add up. Larger donations allow us to shoot for the stars and change lives. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a program worth supporting.

Minions rock socks.

A Christmas Thank You to the Minions

Postby Mr. Natural » Tue Jan 08, 2013 10:00 pm

I came home and there was an envelope in the mailbox that said 'Minions' on it.

It was from the Dad in one of the families we helped this year. His message reads:

"Minions, Merry Christmas! Thanks so much for making our Christmas a possibility once again this year.

We will never forget your generosity. I hope someday to be in the position to pay it forward to families in need the way you guys have done for us!

Sincerely"

Signed by the Dad and his two kids.

There's no shortage of worthy causes in Canandaigua and elsewhere, and we all were approached I'm sure by several at least who came with cap in hand.

Thank you again to everyone who helped out. It doesn't matter a little, it matters a lot. Thanks again to Holly, Mama and Sue for all their hard work in seeing this through.

I am never disappointed by the generosity of the Minions and the gratitude of the recipients who pay it forward.

Another Christmas Thank You to the Minions

Postby Mr. Natural » Thu Feb 28, 2013 9:35 pm

Got home today and grabbed the mail out of the mailbox.

There's a Hallmark card. I turn it over and it's handwritten; from the Ontario County Department of Social Services.

Suzanne's looking over my shoulder and asks why DSS is sending us a letter.

Being A. A guy, and B. Dumb, I manage to scratch my head and say 'duuuuuh' at the same time.

I start to open it and see it's a Thank You card.

I put on my best 'wtf' expression as Suzanne, being A. A girl, and B. Smart says 'It's for the Minions.'

Sure enough.

it says:

"Dear Mr. Marinelli and the Minions,

On behalf of the staff of the Ontario County Department of Child and Family Services, I would like to thank you and your group for the generous donation to the children and families of our county.

The efforts of your group made it possible for several families in need to have a joyous Holiday Season.

We appreciate the hard work and time you all put in to this task.

You are an asset to our community.

It was signed by the Director of Services.

To our friends at the DSS, your partnering with us in our small Holiday venture enables us to keep this project ethical and above board; ensuring that our efforts help folks who really need it.

As long as our little community here continues to enjoy each other's company, we'll continue to help you as we can each year.

We're looking forward to December 2013 already!

On behalf of the Minions, I thank you.
